Ueno with a kid: the science museum and the first cherry blossoms

Short answer

A lot in a small area. We had a picnic in Ueno Park, saw the giant blue whale outside the National Museum of Nature and Science, went in for the dinosaurs, and found early cherry blossoms already blooming at the park entrance on March 4. Akihabara is a short train ride away for the evening.

Our Ueno day

Wednesday, March 4 was our first full day in Tokyo, after a rainy move from Osaka the day before. We kept it simple: one area, mostly outdoors, one museum.

A picnic in the park

We started with a picnic in Ueno Park at about 1 pm, food from a convenience store, eaten in the sun. Ueno Park is big, with wide paths, temples, a pond and plenty of space for a kid to run before a museum.

The whale and the dinosaurs

Right by the park, the National Museum of Nature and Science has a life-size blue whale model outside, diving into the lawn. It is the best welcome a museum can have.

Inside, we went for the dinosaurs. The Tyrannosaurus stands in a dark hall, lit from below, with screens around it. We were there at 1:20 pm, and it is the room kids remember.

The museum has much more: animals of the world, Japan’s nature, science and space. We saw only part of it. With a morning start, you could easily spend three hours.

The first cherry blossoms

At about 3 pm, by the park entrance and its big stone, we found something we did not expect in early March: cherry trees in full pink bloom. These are early varieties, weeks ahead of the famous main bloom, and they made the whole entrance glow.

People were taking photos from every angle, and for good reason. If you are in Tokyo in early March, look for these early trees. We saw more the next day around Azabudai Hills. More on the season in Japan in late February with kids.

Sushi and Akihabara

At about 4 pm we stopped for sushi near Ueno, then took the train to Akihabara for the evening: games, toys, arcades and bright signs. A good end for a 9-year-old, and a short ride from Ueno.

Tips for Ueno with kids

  • Start with the park if the weather is good, the museum if it rains.
  • Picnic food from a convenience store is quick and cheap, and kids choose their own.
  • One museum is enough. Ueno has several. Pick one and do it properly.
  • The zoo is in the same park if your kids are younger or love animals.

Our other big Tokyo day was Fuji, Tokyo Tower, teamLab and Shibuya. For how we got around, see trains in Japan with a kid.

What we'd do differently

  • We would come in the morning and give the museum more time. There is far more than dinosaurs.
  • We would look up which early cherry trees bloom where. They were the surprise of the day.

Where to stay in Japan with kids

By area, not by hotel. We don't rate hotels.

  • Osaka, Namba: Dotonbori and street food at the door, direct trains to Kansai Airport.
  • Osaka, around Osaka Station or Shin-Osaka: Fast starts for day trips to Kyoto and Himeji.
  • Tokyo, Shinjuku: The biggest train hub in Tokyo, lots of choice, Omoide Yokocho five minutes away.
  • Tokyo, Shibuya: Right by the crossing. Busy and bright, kids usually love it.

Questions parents ask

Is Ueno good for kids?

Very. The park, the science museum, the zoo and a pond are all next to each other, and you can do as much or as little as the kid wants.

Is the National Museum of Nature and Science good for kids?

Yes. Dinosaur skeletons, animals, space and Japan's nature, with a life-size blue whale model outside. For a 9-year-old it is one of the best museums in Tokyo.

How long do you need at the science museum in Ueno?

Two to three hours to see the main halls. We did less, focusing on the dinosaurs, and could easily have stayed longer.

When do cherry blossoms bloom in Ueno?

The main bloom is usually in late March and early April. Some early varieties bloom weeks before: on March 4 we found pink trees in full flower at the park entrance.

Can you have a picnic in Ueno Park?

Yes. We bought food at a convenience store and ate in the park. In cherry blossom season the lawns fill up fast with picnics.

What is near Ueno for kids?

Ueno Zoo is in the same park. Akihabara, with its games, toys and anime shops, is a short train ride away, and good for an evening.
