Osaka or Tokyo first with kids? Why we started in Osaka

Short answer

We started in Osaka and ended in Tokyo, and we would do it the same way. Osaka is an easier first city after a long flight, Kansai Airport puts you right into it, and Tokyo works well as the big finale. If flights allow, fly into Osaka and home from Tokyo.

Why Osaka first worked for us

It starts right at the airport. We landed at Kansai Airport at 5:44 pm and by about 8 pm we were walking through a covered shopping street in Osaka, looking for sushi. No second flight, no long transfer. How we did it is in from Kansai Airport to Osaka with a kid.

It is a gentle first city. After a long flight, nobody has the energy for Tokyo’s biggest stations. Osaka is busy but easy. Our first full day was slow on purpose: the underground malls of Umeda, a set lunch, and Dotonbori in the late afternoon, when the neon starts to glow.

It is a good base. Himeji and Kyoto are both easy day trips, so we unpacked once for a whole week. See Osaka as a base for Kyoto and Himeji.

Universal Studios is there. For a 9-year-old, that alone makes Osaka the place to start. A big win early in the trip sets the mood.

Why Tokyo works as the finale

By the time we got to Tokyo, our son knew how to tap in at the gates, follow line colors and find an exit. Tokyo was suddenly not scary at all. It was the big final level of a game he already knew.

Tokyo also has the big wow moments: Fuji over the city on a clear morning, Tokyo Tower, teamLab and Shibuya Crossing from above. Saving them for last meant the trip ended on a high, not on a long train back to the first airport.

Flying in and out

We flew into Kansai Airport and home from Tokyo Haneda. That meant one long train ride in the middle of the trip (Osaka to Tokyo) instead of an extra one at the end.

If you book a multi-city ticket from the start, check that both airports work with your airline. Haneda is much closer to central Tokyo than Narita, which matters on a departure morning with a tired kid.

When we would choose Tokyo first

  • Your flights into Tokyo are much better or cheaper.
  • Tokyo Disney is the main wish, and you want it while everyone is fresh.
  • You plan to end the trip with a few calm days in Kyoto or by the sea.

In that case, do it in reverse: Tokyo, then the Shinkansen west, then fly home from Kansai Airport.

How long in each

We had seven nights in Osaka and three in Tokyo. Osaka was right. Tokyo was too short. Our day-by-day split, and what we would change, is in how many days you need in Japan with kids.

What we'd do differently

  • We would book the flights so we land in Osaka and leave from Tokyo from the start, instead of changing them on the way.
  • We would keep Tokyo last, but give it more nights.

Where to stay in Japan with kids

By area, not by hotel. We don't rate hotels.

  • Osaka, Namba: Dotonbori and street food at the door, direct trains to Kansai Airport.
  • Osaka, around Osaka Station or Shin-Osaka: Fast starts for day trips to Kyoto and Himeji.
  • Tokyo, Shinjuku: The biggest train hub in Tokyo, lots of choice, Omoide Yokocho five minutes away.
  • Tokyo, Shibuya: Right by the crossing. Busy and bright, kids usually love it.

Questions parents ask

Is Osaka or Tokyo better for kids?

Both are great. Osaka is smaller, easier and more relaxed, with Universal Studios and an excellent aquarium. Tokyo has more of everything, which is exciting but tiring. For a first city, Osaka is gentler.

Can you fly into Osaka and out of Tokyo?

Yes. Many airlines sell this as a multi-city ticket. We flew into Kansai Airport and home from Haneda, so we never had to go back to Osaka.

How do you get from Osaka to Tokyo with kids?

By Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka, about two and a half hours on the fastest trains. Our tips for seats and suitcases are in our Shinkansen answer.

When does it make sense to start in Tokyo?

If your flights to Tokyo are much better, or if Tokyo Disney is the top wish. Then end in Osaka and fly home from Kansai Airport.

Is Tokyo overwhelming for kids?

It can be at rush hour and in the big stations. By the end of the trip our son knew how trains work, so Tokyo felt exciting, not scary.

Should you stay in Kyoto instead of Osaka?

With kids we liked Osaka more as a base: more space, more food, easy trains and Universal Studios. Kyoto works well as a day trip, or two.
